Is President Obama Against Abortion?

The End of the Culture Wars

The biggest dividing issues in American Politics have been Gay Rights and Abortion. These issues sparked a major political power struggle that has come to be known as the culture wars. These issues were the major platform for the Republican Party helping it eventually gain control of both the White House and the Congress. With The Election of President Obama it was the first time in 8 years a democratic presidential nominee was able to address these issues successfully. So how did President Obama present these two politically volatile issues to the voters in a way that they could accept and understand the Democrat’s positions?

President Obama first has presented himself as a pragmatist. He used his significant communication skills and conveyed common sense approach to social issues that most voters could agree with. In the case of Gay Marriage he pushed the argument that Gay marriage was a private matter between two consenting adults. He also agreed with the policy of letting each state decide on the issue. The success of this approach has been proven by approval of gay marriage in Maine Iowa, New Hampshire, and Vermont. With the momentum provided by the state greater political support has grown for Gay right and full marriage rights.

In the case of Abortion President Obama used a situation that was filled with controversy to strengthen his position. When President Obama was invited to speak at Notre Dame University, there was great controversy considering that the school is a Catholic institution and the Church opposes abortion and the president supports a woman’s right to choose to have an abortion. The controversy intensified as the day of the speech approached with major American clerics and cardinals deciding to boycott the commencement. President Obama took the controversy head on saying that the debate was necessary but appealed to a more civil discourse and that both sides work towards the common goal of reducing unwanted pregnancies through education and preventative measures. The President used the fact that neither side actually likes abortion and used that point of agreement as a foundation for cooperation.

Finally, the President is attuned to the times. In both cases popular sentiment has shifted from previous positions. This has given the president the political will to find a middle way where none of his predecessors could. Using common sense approaches and civil language President Obama has mostly defused the impact of the culture wars on modern politics in the U.S.

While President Obama may or may not be Gay (though most everyone I know believes he is) there can be no doubt that he is against abortion. Repeatedly he has said how he wants to reduce the number of abortions. He also made it clear in his speech at Notre Dame that he is pro-Catholic, that means pro-life. By President Obama focusing on middle ground and not just the babies, I believe he is opening a wider perspective on the discussion. Nobody LIKES to have to kill babies, but there are sometimes a woman just has to — it is legal, our Constitution allows it, and people just need to get over it. Those who are anti-choice need to come to the middle ground with President Obama and understand that he will do whatever he needs to do to ensure the population of the United States does not get out of control.

Mr Rational Says:

Wow are you stupid. You actually THINK BHO is gay? “To Have To Kill Babies” ….since when MUST we kill babies? Since when is pro-catholic equivalent to pro-life? You need to open your mind a bit! No wonder this wing-nut got elected president by people like you! Not afraid to speak up and spout all sorts of incorrect information of which you THINK you know something about, but clearly do not! Dont vote in the next election. BHO is the most DIVISIVE president since Lincoln! He has started a Class war and a cultural war! He is NOT bringing this country together, he is killing it; And the babies!

Thomas Says:

now thats funny, obama gay? I am gay and trust me he IS NOT GAY. just because someone shows compassion for a discriminated group doesnt make him one of them. The ones I fear are the homophobics who are more likely supressing their gay side and seek to destract it by violent, condeming acts.

Equality does not mean equality.

Victoris Says:

How can you say Obama is against abortion when he and his wife held a fundraiser for it? Do your research people! Serch on “Michelle Obama abortion fund raiser” it will even show you a copy of the invitation and how it so important to help support her husband on this issue.

He even says he wants to protect the doctors and give them rights to finish the abortion on children born live in botched abortions so they won’t get sued! Is sick!

Caterina Says:

Why on EARTH would anyone think that Obama is gay???? He’s a happily married father in love with his wife!

Mar Says:

No way, sister. Abortion kills a human life and there is no middle ground for that. Obama is the most pro-abortion president we have ever had as demonstrated by his voting record in the senate and now as a president. We have aborted over 50,000,000 babies since Roe vs Wade which is 1/6 of the population of the USA. We are experiencing the consequences of our lose of population due to abortions. This ecomonic crises is a natural reaction to the lack of people who would be buying homes, cars and other things.

Joe Says:

The population would not be out of control if people could just keep it in their pants.

NOBama Says:

You have got to be kidding me…..Ever heard of the Illinois Born-Alive Infants Protection Act? Well you might want do a little more research. Here is a link http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/obama_and_infanticide.html

And population control is what something that someone came up with in the 40’s…let me see what was his name…. Hitler. It is called Eugenics. Read up on that as well.

Iris Says:

Women will ALWAYS have abortions…not on a baby…but a fetus. I know many women that have died or had terrible infections from either trying to do this themselves or by shoddy doctors.

In the 60’s, I had to go underground. This was a group of Priests and Rabbis that would send a girl to P.R. to a good doctor. I was fortunate, but many others were not as fortunate as I was. The doctor in P.R. would send a car to pick up the patient, call them to make sure they were okay..as did the Priests and Rabbis.

The government should NOT be able to control a woman’s body.
The last I looked, this wasn’t China.

Bryan Says:

I’m glad to see that some of us utilize those vital brain cell, separating us from the inbred homophobes… that BHO is sucure enough in his own masculinity, value system and orientation that he can support EQUAL (not “special” and the right wing-nuts say..) rights for gays and say so with confidence.
On abortion, lets go a bit further… OK, so nobody likes it. Though I do see the moral difference between a “morning after” type pill that prevents implantation or the fertilized egg, and a “DNX” precedure which is sadly legal, virtually dismembering a live baby without anesthesia prior to birth, all would agree that most abortions are performed for reasons of birth control. And the woman gets all the blame, and negative attention.. Come on guys, “man up!” Tens of millions of legal abortions since Roe v Wade in 1973.. someone does not care or is incredibly stupid.
I feel that abortions should remain legal, with increased restrictions on late term procedures (rape incest cases reviewed by 2 or 3 doctors, and a court appointed mediator). The woman should be required to view photos of fetal growth. Prolife demonstrators should have reasonable access to clinic entrances, without blocking patients. And, abortion providors should be labeled and exposed for who they are and what they specialize in, through media presentations etc. However, the providers should not be targeted for harm or threats of any kind. This is a legal procedure, and if people just open their minds a bit, maybe, there is a middle ground that will work to decrease abortion as birth control (97% in the USA)through education, outlaw it entirely for the sole purpose of harvesting stem cell/ and organ tissue in the 2nd and 3rd trimester. (yes, it happens). Making martyers out of abortion doctors does not reduces abortions, maybe “keeping it zipped” may be worth a try. Guys?

Vicki Says:

Many people say that the US is the greatest country in the world because of the individual freedom. Yet a loud talking “moral” minority want to impose their values on everyone else. The US is not Iran, but in reality this moral minority would like it to be by legalizing their beliefs. Aborting of collection of cells with the potential of growing into a human being is a very private decision and no one should judge a woman’s decision to do so. Let them see a desperate woman struggling into a hospital emergency room with a wire coat hanger coming out of her vagina. And of course the rich will continue to go to Europe for an abortion and then a lovely touring vacation!

I find it disgusting to see parents who are usually poor who have produced 5,6,7+ children, But that is their right. I don’t take to the streets holding a sign and shouting insults.

Jen Says:

When should we stop “imposing” morals on people? I guess Vicki would rather live in anarchy. Why stop with abortion? Let’s make any murder legal, not just the murder of innocent children. After all, isn’t killing others part of the 10 Commandments? So aren’t laws designed to prevent theft and murder just imposing Christian morals on others? (can you hear my sarcasm?)
In reality, the laws that are set in this country are designed to protect individuals. Murder, stealing, child porn, abusing the elderly are all illegal because they cause harm to another person. Using this same rationale, abortion should be illegal. We are simply trying to protect a living being that can’t protect him/herself. Abortion is wrong and selfish.
