It doesn't appear that the REASONS for working the extra hours were analyzed, even though it is very likely these same reasons that are making these teens more likely to engage in the behaviors studied, such as a less supportive home environment. If this wasn't accounted for, the study is taking a mere correlation and inaccurately attributing it to cause and effect. As a side note, the article does not explain why it was concluded that the behaviors reported might lead to riskier behavior. I would think it's possible that older partners might be more responsible in using safe practices, rather than less, and actually lead to more responsible behavior. Considering that the article doesn't explain why the researchers believe that the situations described "may lead" to riskier behavior, their hypotheses appear unfounded.
