Health Care Reform, Things are Looking Very Different Now: What happened to Mr. Obama?

Back in January when Barack Obama took office the Democrats seemed to think that they were finally going to get their message across on health care and sail the reforms they wanted through on the back of a hugely popular and charismatic new president. Public opinion seemed to be on their side and with a majority in Congress ready to support it should have all added up to plain sailing.

But that was in January. In the heat of August things are looking very different. The debate over health care reform has become a firestorm, with mudslinging from both sides and a White House that seems to be sending a different message about their plans every day.

Some blame Obama himself. His plans have become unclear; he has been drawn into petty arguments with critics that have little to do with the actual business of discussing the reforms he is trying to push through. Some Democrats are worried that his message keeps shifting and he no longer holds the moral high ground he once did.

This summer has been one of interrupted town hall debates (although the ones that the President himself attended were rather friendly and tame) and the spread of myths and questionable arguments by the opponents of health care reform in the guise that Obama proposes it. Myths that seem are taking a hold in large sectors of the public consciousness.

The newest NBC News poll did show a significant change in the number of people supporting the president and his health care reforms, but half the people questioned did believe some of the myths that the Republicans have been putting about, including that the Obama plan will provide coverage for illegal immigrants and that it amounts to a government takeover of the health care business.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs conceded that mistakes have been made “I don’t think anybody here believes we’ve pitched a no-hit game or a perfect game, I don’t think that’s the case.” he said last week.

The fact may be that the Democrats seriously underestimated the amount of resistance that they would face and how hard, and dirty, opponents would be willing to fight. Obama now needs to concentrate on making his message as clear as it was back in the winter, when the nation seemed to be far more receptive to his ideas.

Ralph Says:

Obama and the democratic party is all about government give aways funded by generations yet unborn. I was a telephone lineman, installer, repairman for 35 years, and worked from 200 to 600 hours a year to provide for the needs of my family. When the kids got bigger my wife worked also. How do you think we feel about providing health care for anybody who can sneak into our country, teach them english, pay for their jail time???? Keep up the give aways and they will keep increasing in numbers!

Dave Says:

Just another example of how the myths exist on both sides of the isle. The bill does reference healthcare for all people not just citizens. If they want to leave that door open than it’s not a myth, is it? If they want to send a clear message that healthcare will be for citizens then all they have to do is put that kind of wording in the bill. That would make sense…only if they really mean it. But they won’t…so, you tell me…illegals included in this or not?

Jack Atherton Says:

The author should check his facts. The bill does not exclude illegal aliens from coverage.

The stated goal of Obama is a single payer system (read socialized medicine). The plans now being pushed would eventually push the private insurance industry out of business. What do you suppose would supplant them?

Dwayne Says:

The largest problem with this whole mess is that the very ones who are running around with their townhall meetings and promoting the healthcare overhaul and are the ones who are goiing to vote, or the ones who haven’t read the bill they are voting on. A number of the democrats have made the comment that it would take an army of lawyers weeks to go thru the bill, so how can they be expected to know what is in the bill – yet they are going to defend and vote on it? There are a lot of what liberals call myths being put out by the Republicans, that aren’t myths. Instead what the Republicans are saying is that the areas of concern are what either the bill says, or implies by not saying it. A bad bill should not be voted on just because the intentions are good. If the democrats and Obama want this bill passed, then do what they have said they want, and put a bill together that encompasses what everyone wants. But instead, Palosi, Obama and the liberals are saying that anyone who opposes the bill, that we are just Nazis and terrorists. No, we are more patriotic than you are, and are of the mindset that it is better to not do something than to destroy the very fabric of our country. The democrats say that there are 47 million (and by the way, even their own studies dispute that number) that are without coverage. Most of those are either illegals, young people who normally opt out to save money, etc. But, iif the democrats want to help them, then set up a plan that covers them and leave the rest of us alone who are happy with what we have now. Oh, by the way, stop the doggone lawsuits and you’ll lower the costs also.

Another point, medicare doesn’t save money. Instead, they tell the doctor what is going to be reimbursed, and the rest of us by higher fees cover what it actually costs for the doctor to operate. We are goiing to see droves of doctors leaving their practices, and less young people entering because of their massive school bills, lawsuit expenses, etc. because Obama and his plan aren’t goiing to cover thhe actual costs. Those who support the plan, because they think they are goiing to “get something for free” should move to Canada and leave the US alone.

Michele Balfour Says:

Obama has interfered with the way America should be handling the current problems. Bail-outs, healthcare and next social security, He just doesn’t have the ability to handle the job. We do not respect his ability or his knowledge as he goes along with the crowd to be famous or important and self serving. That attitude is not productive. We need a President that is a leader and is strong in conviction. He just doesn’t have it…….Get the picture, it may be too late. Who is going to be able to streighten out his mess?

Isabella Varner Says:

I believe that the following are two issues which disturb me as a citizen.
1. The expansion of the federal government and the need for more taxes for the new health care system under consideration. I have not heard exactly how it is to be financed.
2. The expansion of executive branch of the federal government and the lessening of the power of the legislative branch.

mahalapril Says:

Obama is and will always be the same naive,ignorant,anti-America,anti-US military,anti-cop,anti-white,anti-CIA and militarily and economically incompetent president. As a pathological liar you can only lie for a time until you run out of lies and then starts blaming and demonizing everybody but himself. Obama can’t lie forever.Obama is now exposed and shown his true colors.

JOHN PEPPERCORN Says:

OBAMA KEEPS CHANGING HIS MESSAGE AND POSITION ON HEALTH CARE. THE US CANNOT AFFORD MORE TAX AND DEFICIT AND OBAMA IS LEADING THIS COUNTRY INTO IRRERVERSABLE BANKRUPTCY.
I HAVE LOST TOTAL CONFIDENCE IN OBAMA.

Victor Sabin Says:

The biggest issue in health care is controlling its cost. Health care reform should focus on that rather than overhauling the hole system. Folks, if we don’t control the cost of health care our next financial crash will be because of a health care bubble. We all know what happened in 2008. Greedy banks and Wall Street sharks sucked the life blood out of economy, the most prosperous in the world, and brought it to the brink of disaster. Why, because we failed to control what these greedy bandits were doing. The same thing is now happening to healthcare. There are no incentives to control costs. No body questions why a small 20 minute surgery and anesthesia should cost thousands of dollars. (To be exact, $14,000 for placement of tubes in both ears and removal of adenoids). These doctors who do procedures, (surgeons, radiologists, anesthesiologists, cardiologists etc)
are paid enormous amounts at the expense of the primary care physicians. An anesthesiologist always charges 20 % of surgeon’s fee, why? Who set these exorbitant fees? Any wonder very doctors want go go in primary care?

Folks, 5-6 years ago a computer cost was $3000, but now it is $800. Why is it so? Because market forces of free competition, economy of scale and increased productivity bring the cost down with time and make a product and a service affordable to the average citizen. This does not happen in health care. Fifteen years ago CAT scan’s cost was $2500 and the greedy radiologist’s reading fee for 20 minutes was $1500. Now after fifteen years it has not come down, in fact it has gone up in some big cities.

Why is it so? Because there just are not any incentives for cost control in health care, neither for doctors and clinics nor for hospitals, drug and insurance companies. They are all hand in gloves to fleece the American public. Folks, health care is an essential service, which we cannot do without. All essential services (police, military, fire fighting etc.) should either be run by government or properly controlled and regulated by government. However inept and inefficient government is, it is NOT a greedy profit amasser. So the government by law must freeze all health care cost increase for next 3 years, reform our health care model by creating a public option for people who cannot afford expensive health care premiums. This public option must be deficit neutral and not add to our deficits. And of course, private health care option should be open to all who wish to use it. We should create competition to shape up the wildly expensive health care system and bring the costs down. Please note UPS and FedEx compete with US Post office and make good profits. There is no government takeover here at all. The same thing should happen in health care.

If we allow our wild health care costs to skyrocket every year, then we are in big trouble. Be prepared for the next financial crash in next 3-4 yrs, brought on by a health care bubble. We will deserve what we get.

Ted Says:

HEALTH CARE REFORM THAT CAN WORK.

1.HEALTH INSURANCE CAN BE BOUGHT IN ANY STATE,NOT JUST WHERE YOU RESIDE.2.INSURANCE CARRIERS MUST ACCEPT PEOPLE WITH PRE EXISTING CONDITIONS AT AFFORDABLE PREMIUM RATES. 3. ILLEGALS WILL BE BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL OR SENT HOME. THEY WILL NOT GET ANY GOVERNMENT BENEFIT UNTIL THEY ARE DOCUMENTED CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES. 4.VA BENEFITS WILL CONTINUE AND IMPROVE TO PROPERLY CARE FOR OUR WOUNDED SOLDIERS.5. THERE WILL BE CAPS ON TORT MEDICAL CASES. 6. SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE WILL BE FUNDED SO THEY CONTINUE AS SET UP ;ESPECIALLY FOR AMERICANS WHO PAID INTO THESE PROGRAMS. 7. DOCTORS WILL CONTINUE TO WORK IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR AND WILL NOT BE FORCED INTO SOME GOVERNMENT AGENCY. DOCTORS WHO WISH TO WORK IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR CAN DO THAT NOW IN CITY AND COUNTY AND STATE HOSPITALS.

IN MY OPINION, THIS SUMMERIZES WHAT WE NEED, IN A FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE WAY.WE DO NOT NEED A HUGE NEW GOV`T AGENCY TO RUN IT. ALMOST EVERYTHING IS ALREADY IN PLACE.NO NEW CZARS AND THEIR STAFFS ARE NEEDED TO RUN THIS PROGRAM

Deana Carson Says:

Obama Bin Ly’in Impeach Now

BRENDA Says:

America needs some type of healthcare reform. Medical bills are causing undue hardship on American families and that is a
fact. The cost of insurance premiums is escalating with the
benefits decreasing every renewal period. The high cost of
insurance premiums are a huge burden of business and threaten American businesses to compete in a global economy because foreing businesses do not have that expense. So what are your suggestions and have any of you who are openly against healthcare reform ever had an illness that affected your finances? It’s easy to criticize the President’s effort but what do you suggest? Health Insurance Companies are making huge profits and dictating how doctors can treat their patients. It is time for something to be done. I don’t want socailized medicine either. There must be something we can do that would be better than socialized medicine. I think that what President Obama is suggesting is universl
insurance that everyone who works would help fund. Many people working today do not have health insurance offered at their jobs because the employer can not afford it. Many people today choose not to participate in offered health insurance benefits because it is so expensive so they play
Russian roulette with their health care and when something
bad happens then the American taxpayer pays the price in taxes. President Obama says that before we can work on the huge budget deficit our country has, we must do something about the astronomical rise in healthcare cost. I believe him. Don’t be closed minded and look at this issue along party lines. Think for yourself and look at the true facts.
You will be able to see the issues more clearly and come up with your very own thoughts. Maybe someone who thinks for themselves will be able to come up with the solution.
I have great confidence in America. We are a people that rise up in the worst of times. We need to pray. We need to be
thoughtful and smart. Realize that there is many who would continue to benefit from leaving healthcare alone and it not
the average, hard working, struggling to pay your health insurance premium, regular guy.

Casey Says:

It is ridiculous for anyone to blame the lack of progress on President Obama. It is not President Obama who is constantly throwing curves about healthcare, it is senators and congressmen who are responsible for this. Everyone is really quick to look at the president and blame him for what goes wrong, but let us not forget that it is the house, senate, and congress that has to approve of the President’s plan in order for it to take effect. There is never just one person who is to blame, there are many. I have heard senators all over the country being totally against President Obama’s health care reform bill, but not ONE person who is without insurance actively stand against it. Something needs to be done. If we want the health care system to be fixed, then we have to come together and find a solution. Not a republican solution, and not a democrat solution, but an American solution. Let us not forget as well, “A house divided against itself CANNOT stand.” Pray for Obama, and that his leadership is Godly and helps America.
