the problem is that uneducated doctors are prescribing these drugs for other conditions such as hoarsness and sore throats insisting people have gerd when they absolutly have no symptoms of heartburn. You then end up with severe heartburn, an altered digestive system (one that worked perfectly before ppi therepy), and then you end up at a GI's office who furthur continues your ppi thereapy telling you you have reflux disease(even though you never had it before). No one ever considered bile reflux which is common or the possibility of too little acid (the usual culprit). Once a patient can not stand the side effects any longer they usually abruptly quit taking the ppi against the dr's advice who keeps telling you the medicine is not causeing your problems and then you end up with rebound acid and your stomach lining gets damaged beyound imagination. This is a roller coaster situation and it should be against the law for
drs to prescribe these medicines without knowing or caring about the longterm consequences for the patient.

GERD is a cronic disease. When did 8 weeks become long term? Long term is 12 years.
If you do not have acid reflux do not take the medication.
