No advances have ever been made using embryonic stem cells. All the major successes have been with using adult stem cells, as in this case. So Bush never stopped this kind of resarch which is now able to do things like this!

Thanks to all who addressed the ignorance displayed by those who used this forum to spew their hatred of Bush because of his restrictions on embryonic stem cell research. Bush absolutely did not curtail the use of adult stem cells, which are the only stem cells which have been proven to actually help people. My own brother had a stem cell transplant using his own stem cells as a lymphoma treatment. As far as the utter ignorance goes that is displayed in some of these comments, you are witnessing what is so very wrong with America right now. These people have been brainwashed and appear uneducated and ill-informed, when they use every forum to further their politics of left-wing propaganda. So sick of it!

You two (riverwings & north) epitomize the sorry state of science education in the US today. President Bush prohibited embryonic stem-cell research; if you carefully read the article, you will see that the medical team used mesenchymal stem cells obtained from the patient himself.

What ignorant comments! Do you understand that the surgery was made possible using the patient’s OWN stem cells. Use of a adult stem cells was the area Pres Bush wanted explored, which has rendered many possible treatments, without killing an embryo and without having the many problems associated with fetal stem cells. Fetal stem cells have not proven to be the miracle cure the left propoganda machine promised. Actually read the article next time.

Bush and the “right winged” zealots are not against STEM CELL research…. We are against EMBROYNIC STEM CELL RESEARCH.
At least get your facts right before you blast away!!!!
I am glad they are able to use the person’s OWN stems for this…. means less embroy’s distroyed for this purpose.

My daughter has a genetic disorder, neurofibroidmatosis. It is disfiguring . I was wondering if stem cells can repair any damage due to this disorder. She has a jaw bone that ias missing.

Um, guys? I’m no scientist, so maybe I’m wrong here, but since this surgery was performed using the boy’s own stem cells, it sounds like this kind of stem cell research could have been performed without using any embryonic stem cells….which actually kinda justifies Bush’s reticence to destroy embryos for research.

I am waiting for stem cells to be able to be used to grow a new liver for transplant. Is this possible? Rejection from the transplant system we use today prevents patients from living to the average life expectancy and strong anti rejection drugs have to be taken.

On October 2 I had adult stem cell therapy treatment in my right knee at the Institute Of Regenerative and Molecular Orthopaedics in Boca Raton, FL. They have a web site. My doctor used anesthesia but it still hurt. HOWEVER today I am walking without a cane, no pain and with a positive attitude and hope that I will be able to dance with my husband again. Many of my friends are watching my progress.

Today the FDA has not approved this particular treatment because of the previous president, but I understand that they are funding adult stem cell research for MS patients. This treatment is used by many of the professional sports organizations to heal tendons in injured players. Recovery time has been dropped to 25% according to articles in the N.Y. Times. And of course multi millions of dollars saved in lost player time.
A whole new world of medical treatment has been opened up to us through the persistence of the world’s scientist. I am very proud to be part of this new frontier. Congratulations to the doctors who are restoring this teenagers cheekbones and thank you AOL for presenting the news.
